Last week, Ellen Ott Marshall joined us for a one-hour webinar where she shared from her work about conflict and offered concrete suggestions for how to live well with one another. Dr. Marshall began the webinar by encouraging a shift away from asking “What should I do when conflict arises?” This question assumes a “normal” state of affairs where conflict is not present. Instead, Dr. Marshall encouraged us to recognize conflict as a constant in our world, and suggested we should focus on how we live well in the midst of conflict that is ongoing.
Here are some of the “take aways” that participants in the webinar named:
- Self care and self awareness have a lot to do with how we respond to conflict. The healthier I am, the healthier my response will be.
- Ask questions first, and listen more. Don’t be defensive.
- Refuse to be afraid.
- Remember my baptism. Pray for a discerning heart, the courage to will and persevere, a spirit to know and love God, and the gift of joy and wonder in all of God’s works.
