A pair of red tail hawks have been building a large nest in a tall tree behind our house. My husband and I have been watching these hard-working birds for several days now. They are amazing to watch. The male hawk does most of the hunting and gathering materials for the nest while the female stays close to their home. They are preparing for new life that will emerge in the weeks to come. All they need for their life together is generously provided for them by God through his creation.
As I continue to observe these wonderful birds, I am drawn to reflect on God’s compassionate and abounding love for us. Matthew 6:26 says “Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (NRSA)
God not only cares for our physical needs, but he cares for our spiritual future as well.
God’s grace-filled generosity provides us with resurrected life through Jesus Christ.
God has given us all we need to be in communion with Him and one another.
As we continue our Lenten journey to the cross, the days will grow dark and solemn and God’s epitomic generosity will unfold on the cross. May we embrace this season with repentant and thankful hearts as we move toward Easter.
I am looking forward to seeing baby hawks soon fly from their nest. What greater generosity is there, than new life and eternity with God.
