At Annual Conference we talked a lot about supporting and knowing our immigrant neighbors. We often hear big questions that start, “why don’t immigrants just______?”
I assume that most people reading this, even advocates for their immigrant neighbors, don’t know well how the immigration system works in the USA. It has been built on centuries of conflicting ideas, and many of the laws we have today are antiquated by international standards.
Below, I will put two helpful images. Both of them are a few years old, but since it takes so long for our laws to change, they are still accurate. Keep in mind that these do not take into consideration the recent number of Executive Orders that have made it much more difficult for asylum seekers to lawfully enter the Country.
Image one, a simplified version.
Image two, a one page sheet from ImmigrationRoad.com (which has been featured on many top news agencies around the country) which shows most of the options available to achieve a Green Card.
