Ministries with Immigrants

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it”       Hebrews 12:2

This call to show hospitality and welcome strangers, is echoed throughout the biblical narrative. How do we do that??  There are many ways to show hospitality to immigrants and make them part of your congregation, plus provide help and services to help them integrate into American society. This is at the heart of John Wesley’s approach to evangelism, to provide hospitality and care services to strangers. One of an immigrant’s greatest needs is sound, inexpensive legal advice, so we invite you to attend a briefing session on Ministries with Immigrants.

August 7, 2018.

Lucama United Methodist Church

403 S. Main St., Lucama NC 27851

Lucama is a small town just south of Wilson NC on US 301

Join us for supper at 6.15pm followed by the presentation and discussion at 7.00pm

Our speaker is Brian Heymans, Chair of the Board of Church and Society for the NC Conference, and member of the NCCUMC Immigration Task Force, himself an immigrant from South Africa, and creator of two immigration law clinics under the JFON banner in Texas. JFON is a national United Methodist ministry derived out of UMCOR and the General Board of Global Ministries.

We will describe how any congregation can create a variety of ministries with immigrants including establishing a legal services clinic for immigrants supported by JFON, a ministry that your congregation can participate in. Topics covered will be:

  • learning about our immigration laws;
  • opportunities for ministries with immigrants;
  • the positive economic impact of immigration;
  • how to establish and run a JFON immigration law clinic;
  • benefits of these ministries to your congregation.
