Mitchell Lewis wrote an article entitled <em>United Methodism and Apostolic Succession.\u00a0 <\/em>Apostolic Succession was extremely important in the early Church.\u00a0 <em>Nelson\u2019s New Christian Dictionary, <\/em>\u00a0edited by George Kurian, states that \u201cApostolic succession is the Doctrine of an unbroken transmission of the Holy Spirit conveyed by properly ordained bishops through the laying on of hands going back to the first apostles and to Christ Himself. The continuity of the succession is considered a sign of the validity of all ordinations and is taught in the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Episcopal churches.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2016 <em>Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church, <\/em>\u00b6302 reads: \u201cOrdination and Apostolic Ministry\u2014The pattern for this response to the call is provided in the development of the early church. The apostles led in prayer, teaching, and preaching, ordered the spiritual and temporal life of the community, established leadership for the ministry of service, and provided for the proclamation of the gospel to new persons and in new places. The early church, through the laying on of hands, set apart persons with responsibility to preach, to teach, to administer the sacraments, to nurture, to heal, to gather the community in worship, and to send them forth in witness.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, the General Commission on Archives and History collected a list of all the persons who had been consecrated Bishop in The United Methodist Church and its predecessors dating from 1784-2012.\u00a0 You are able to follow your or your pastor\u2019s ordination if they were ordained by Bishop Hope Morgan Ward or prior, and can trace the \u00a0Apostolic Chain through the list provided in the PDF found here: <a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/gcah.org\/UMC_History\/BISHOPS.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/gcah.org\/UMC_History\/BISHOPS.PDF<\/a>.\u00a0 This list helps trace back to John Wesley.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was ordained an Elder on June 2, 2003 in Fayetteville, NC by Bishop Marion M. Edwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Marion Edwards, elected bishop in 1996<\/li><li>John Owen Smith, elected bishop in 1960<\/li><li>Edwin Dubose Mouzon, elected bishop in 1910<\/li><li>Eugene Russell Hendrix, elected bishop in 1886<\/li><li>Holland Nimmons McTyeire, elected bishop in 1866<\/li><li>William Capers, elected bishop in 1846<\/li><li>William M\u2019Kendree, elected bishop in 1808<\/li><li>Francis Asbury, elected bishop in 1784 by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archives.umc.org\/interior.asp?mid=258&amp;GID=216&amp;GMOD=VWD&amp;GCAT=C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christmas Conference<\/a> (Bishop Francis Asbury was elected an Elder by Bishop Thomas Coke)<\/li><li>Thomas Coke, appointed superintendent by Dr. John Wesley, ordained Elder within the Church of England<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Rev.
