Lesly Zelaya and her husband Mauricio have been apart since February of this year, when he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine probation check-in. Mauricio has been at Stewart Detention Center, in Lumpkin, Georgia for almost four months. Stewart is one of the many ‘for profit’ immigration detention centers across the United States where COVID-19 outbreaks have been reported. Mauricio and Lesly are no strangers to trauma and loss. They continue to mourn the death of Lesly’s older son, Jorge, who was killed on June 6th, 2019 at the tender age of 24. Lesly and her family continue to cry for justice to be done for Jorge. It was in the midst of this pain and brokenness that Lesly and Mauricio were torn apart through the enforcement of inhumane immigration policies. Lesly and her four children are praying for Mauricio’s release and safe return to their home in Raleigh, North Carolina. They are working and asking for support to raise the $16,000 that are needed to help cover Mauricio’s legal fees.
