The United Methodist Church’s top legislative body, the General Conference begins its quadrennial meeting today, May 10, in Portland, Oregon, and will continue through May 20.
General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church which meets once every four years. The conference can revise church law, as well as adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy and economic issues. It also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs.
Each annual conference and the Central Conferences elect delegates to represent them at this gathering; 864 delegates will be in attendance this year.
Not every United Methodist will be a delegate to General Conference, but that does not mean that you cannot participate in all that is happening. There are plenty of ways for you to be involved.
Pray for God to guide the General Conference’s decisions, for Christ to lead us into the future, and for the Holy Spirit to empower us to go on toward perfection in our love of God and one another.
Know Your Delegates
Pray for each delegate and leader from the North Carolina Conference by name. View the list of the NC Conference delegates and reserves.
The job of a delegate is time-consuming and sometimes stressful. Many lay delegates are giving up vacation time to be there, and the clergy are often spending an extended time away from their congregations. Lift them, their families, and their churches in prayer.
Consider writing an encouraging note in the comments below or send email to the delegates, letting them know you are praying for them.
