Using a 33-bead model created in the 1980s\, Protestants are exploring and enjoying this means of contemplative prayer. In this webinar\, we’ll assemble our own prayer bead strings from kits and spend some time practicing this calming\, comforting\, affirming prayer practice. \nAbout the Presenter:\n\n\n\nRev. Dr. Anne Walker Sims is a United Methodist elder\, the spouse of a disabled United Methodist elder\, and the proud pet parent of two dogs who remind her daily of the unconditional love of God and the need to laugh regularly. She is the pastor of Oriental UMC in beautiful Oriental\, NC\, and shamelessly shares photos of the “Sailboat Capital of North Carolina” often on Facebook. Anne has flirted with contemplative practices her entire life\, despite being a strong extrovert with ADD. Building on a quarter century of ministry experience\, a doctoral dissertation on community building in divided settings\, and the knowledge that there is something valuable in contemplation if she could only figure out how to settle down to do it\, she began to develop a personal contemplative spiritual practice toolbox (both virtual and physical) to help her grow in her faith and support her mental and physical health. \nAnne has an Masters of Divinity from Duke Divinity School and her Doctor of Ministry from Drew Theological School. In 25 years of ministry\, she’s led numerous Bible studies and book groups\, led workshops and retreats on praying with labyrinths\, prayer beads\, through journaling and art\, lectio divina\, and more\, developed prayer stations and liturgical arts experiences for worship\, and pastored urban and rural congregations. She’s passionate about developing and deepening relationships between people and God. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe have reached our limit of 40 registrants to receive the free kits assembled by COSROW. Please reach out to cle@nccumc.org if you are still interested in registering. We’ll accommodate you if we can! Heritage district is offering a discount to anyone who signs up for both Basic (April 13) and Sharing Your Faith (April 20). Plus\, anyone who takes these two courses will have the coursework they need to apply to become a certified lay servant (learn more). Offer open to all UMC laity. Both classes are on Zoom. \nCourse scholarships are available to those in need of financial assistance. Scholarships reduce the cost of a course to $5. Please contact your district director or cle@nccumc.org. \nAbout the Course: \nBecause of the more aggressive and confrontational tactics we hear about\, evangelism has developed a bad connotation. Doors are shut hurriedly\, phone calls end abruptly\, and e-mails left unanswered. \nAfter all\, isn’t this a task better handled by the pastor? \nPerhaps it’s time to reexamine John Wesley’s model of evangelism as a full\, natural circle—where it’s a communal beginning point rather than a solitary end. \nThe central motive of authentic evangelism is: Having received a message that’s made all the difference in our lives\, we desire to share that message with others in the hope that it will transform their lives as well. Wesley models an evangelism that reaches out and welcomes\, invites\, and nurtures\, and speaks to both head and heart. \nThis course leads participants to learn from John Wesley how to practice relational evangelism. They will discover that evangelism involves not only sharing our faith with others but also welcoming people into a community where they can grow in faith. \nLearners will: \n\nExplore how to share Christ and the Gospel comfortably and naturally within all of our relationships\, and how to nurture new Christians in their faith and deal with the tough questions so me may have;\nExplore the biblical models of evangelism and the relationship of hospitality to evangelism;\nIdentify and reflect on faith stories;\nDiscuss theological principles related to the ways people come to faith;\nExplore ways in which the church can support families as centers of faith development.\n\nOrder Your Book! \nAll participants are expected to read Transforming Evangelism: The Wesleyan Way of Sharing Faith prior to taking this course. \nFor questions about the course\, please contact district director Ken Ripley (ripleykv@twc.com). \nAbout the Facilitator:\n\n\n\nKen Ripley\, a member of Gibson Memorial UMC in Spring Hope\, has been a lay speaker since 1979 and a certified lay minister since 2018. Ken also serves as Heritage district director of Lay Servant Ministries. He is active in prison ministry and has a passion for evangelism. He is also an award-winning journalist active in civic and charitable organizations. \n\n\n\n\n\n#gform_wrapper_60[data-form-index=”1″].gform-theme\,[data-parent-form=”60_1″]{–gf-color-primary: #204ce5;–gf-color-primary-rgb: 32\, 76\, 229;–gf-color-primary-contrast: #fff;–gf-color-primary-contrast-rgb: 255\, 255\, 255;–gf-color-primary-darker: #001AB3;–gf-color-primary-lighter: #527EFF;–gf-color-secondary: #fff;–gf-color-secondary-rgb: 255\, 255\, 255;–gf-color-secondary-contrast: #112337;–gf-color-secondary-contrast-rgb: 17\, 35\, 55;–gf-color-secondary-darker: #F5F5F5;–gf-color-secondary-lighter: #FFFFFF;–gf-color-out-ctrl-light: rgba(17\, 35\, 55\, 0.1);–gf-color-out-ctrl-light-rgb: 17\, 35\, 55;–gf-color-out-ctrl-light-darker: rgba(104\, 110\, 119\, 0.35);–gf-color-out-ctrl-light-lighter: #F5F5F5;–gf-color-out-ctrl-dark: #585e6a;–gf-color-out-ctrl-dark-rgb: 88\, 94\, 106;–gf-color-out-ctrl-dark-darker: #112337;–gf-color-out-ctrl-dark-lighter: rgba(17\, 35\, 55\, 0.65);–gf-color-in-ctrl: #fff;–gf-color-in-ctrl-rgb: 255\, 255\, 255;–gf-color-in-ctrl-contrast: #112337;–gf-color-in-ctrl-contrast-rgb: 17\, 35\, 55;–gf-color-in-ctrl-darker: #F5F5F5;–gf-color-in-ctrl-lighter: #FFFFFF;–gf-color-in-ctrl-primary: #204ce5;–gf-color-in-ctrl-primary-rgb: 32\, 76\, 229;–gf-color-in-ctrl-primary-contrast: #fff;–gf-color-in-ctrl-primary-contrast-rgb: 255\, 255\, 255;–gf-color-in-ctrl-primary-darker: #001AB3;–gf-color-in-ctrl-primary-lighter: #527EFF;–gf-color-in-ctrl-light: rgba(17\, 35\, 55\, 0.1);–gf-color-in-ctrl-light-rgb: 17\, 35\, 55;–gf-color-in-ctrl-light-darker: rgba(104\, 110\, 119\, 0.35);–gf-color-in-ctrl-light-lighter: #F5F5F5;–gf-color-in-ctrl-dark: #585e6a;–gf-color-in-ctrl-dark-rgb: 88\, 94\, 106;–gf-color-in-ctrl-dark-darker: #112337;–gf-color-in-ctrl-dark-lighter: rgba(17\, 35\, 55\, 0.65);–gf-radius: 3px;–gf-font-size-secondary: 14px;–gf-font-size-tertiary: 13px;–gf-icon-ctrl-number: url(“data:image/svg+xml\,%3Csvg width=’8′ height=’14’ viewBox=’0 0 8 14′ fill=’none’ xmlns=’http://www.w3.org/2000/svg’%3E%3Cpath fill-rule=’evenodd’ clip-rule=’evenodd’ d=’M4 0C4.26522 5.96046e-08 4.51957 0.105357 4.70711 0.292893L7.70711 3.29289C8.09763 3.68342 8.09763 4.31658 7.70711 4.70711C7.31658 5.09763 6.68342 5.09763 6.29289 4.70711L4 2.41421L1.70711 4.70711C1.31658 5.09763 0.683417 5.09763 0.292893 4.70711C-0.0976311 4.31658 -0.097631 3.68342 0.292893 3.29289L3.29289 0.292893C3.48043 0.105357 3.73478 0 4 0ZM0.292893 9.29289C0.683417 8.90237 1.31658 8.90237 1.70711 9.29289L4 11.5858L6.29289 9.29289C6.68342 8.90237 7.31658 8.90237 7.70711 9.29289C8.09763 9.68342 8.09763 10.3166 7.70711 10.7071L4.70711 13.7071C4.31658 14.0976 3.68342 14.0976 3.29289 13.7071L0.292893 10.7071C-0.0976311 10.3166 -0.0976311 9.68342 0.292893 9.29289Z’ fill=’rgba(17\, 35\, 55\, 0.65)’/%3E%3C/svg%3E”);–gf-icon-ctrl-select: url(“data:image/svg+xml\,%3Csvg width=’10’ height=’6′ viewBox=’0 0 10 6′ fill=’none’ xmlns=’http://www.w3.org/2000/svg’%3E%3Cpath fill-rule=’evenodd’ clip-rule=’evenodd’ d=’M0.292893 0.292893C0.683417 -0.097631 1.31658 -0.097631 1.70711 0.292893L5 3.58579L8.29289 0.292893C8.68342 -0.0976311 9.31658 -0.0976311 9.70711 0.292893C10.0976 0.683417 10.0976 1.31658 9.70711 1.70711L5.70711 5.70711C5.31658 6.09763 4.68342 6.09763 4.29289 5.70711L0.292893 1.70711C-0.0976311 1.31658 -0.0976311 0.683418 0.292893 0.292893Z’ fill=’rgba(17\, 35\, 55\, 0.65)’/%3E%3C/svg%3E”);–gf-icon-ctrl-search: url(“data:image/svg+xml\,%3Csvg version=’1.1′ xmlns=’http://www.w3.org/2000/svg’ width=’640′ height=’640’%3E%3Cpath d=’M256 128c-70.692 0-128 57.308-128 128 0 70.691 57.308 128 128 128 70.691 0 128-57.309 128-128 0-70.692-57.309-128-128-128zM64 256c0-106.039 85.961-192 192-192s192 85.961 192 192c0 41.466-13.146 79.863-35.498 111.248l154.125 154.125c12.496 12.496 12.496 32.758 0 45.254s-32.758 12.496-45.254 0L367.248 412.502C335.862 434.854 297.467 448 256 448c-106.039 0-192-85.962-192-192z’ fill=’rgba(17\, 35\, 55\, 0.65)’/%3E%3C/svg%3E”);–gf-label-space-y-secondary: var(–gf-label-space-y-md-secondary);–gf-ctrl-border-color: #686e77;–gf-ctrl-size: var(–gf-ctrl-size-md);–gf-ctrl-label-color-primary: #112337;–gf-ctrl-label-color-secondary: #112337;–gf-ctrl-choice-size: var(–gf-ctrl-choice-size-md);–gf-ctrl-checkbox-check-size: var(–gf-ctrl-checkbox-check-size-md);–gf-ctrl-radio-check-size: var(–gf-ctrl-radio-check-size-md);–gf-ctrl-btn-font-size: var(–gf-ctrl-btn-font-size-md);–gf-ctrl-btn-padding-x: var(–gf-ctrl-btn-padding-x-md);–gf-ctrl-btn-size: var(–gf-ctrl-btn-size-md);–gf-ctrl-btn-border-color-secondary: #686e77;–gf-ctrl-file-btn-bg-color-hover: #EBEBEB;–gf-field-pg-steps-number-color: rgba(17\, 35\, 55\, 0.8);} \n\nHE: Basic Course + Sharing Your Faith\n** Registration is open until Thursday\, March 28\, 2024\, at 11:00 pm. ERTs fill a specific need in the early days after a disaster to help to prevent further damage while providing a caring Christian presence. \nERTs are not a first-response group of emergency workers\, nor are they recovery\, rebuild\, or repair teams. Under very specific guidelines\, ERTs assist survivors without causing further harm or being a burden to the affected community. \nERT Classes help participants understand how United Methodists are involved during a disaster\, how we get prepared for a disaster\, and what we can do when a disaster strikes. \nRegister Now→ \n\n \n\n\nDisaster Ministries\n \n888-440-9167 \nView Organizer Website \ndisaster@nccumc.org \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Add to calendar \n\n\n\n \n Google Calendar \n \n\n \n iCalendar \n \n\n \n Outlook 365 \n \n\n \n Outlook Live URL:https://nccumc.org/event/ert-recertification-2/ LOCATION:Wesley Memorial UMC\, 1401 College Rd\, Wilmington\, North Carolina\, 28403 ORGANIZER;CN="Disaster Ministries":MAILTO:disaster@nccumc.org END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240503T170000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240505T110000 DTSTAMP:20240328T122137 CREATED:20240319T173514Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240325T213243Z UID:10000396-1714755600-1714906800@nccumc.org SUMMARY:Spring Family Retreat DESCRIPTION:A Taste of Summer Camp for the Entire Family! \n\n\n\nJoin Camp Don Lee May 3-5\, 2024\, for a weekend of fun\, faith\, and relaxation with your family. Hope 4 Humanity offers an experiential learning pilgrimage that explores the causes and difficulties of migration and the impact of U.S. immigration policies. This pilgrimage will bring to the forefront the voices of migrants and people committed to social change through hands-on experiences like visiting migrant shelters (in the U.S. and Mexico) and interacting with migrants. We will learn about the economics of migration. We believe this Day of Learning\, like most of our events\, will have the biggest impact when clergy and laity attend together. Bring a group of 3 or more from your church and receive a 20% discount on your total registration. You must register by May 8th to receive this discount! \nAbout the Day: \nLife is full of the unexpected\, both positive and not so positive. What if\, instead of fighting it when things don’t go as planned\, we leaned into the change and improvised? Improv offers an invigorating approach to life as individuals and as spiritual communities. From Moses to Ruth to Jesus\, scripture is full of people boldly saying “yes\, and…” as they receive what life throws their way and build upon it. \nJoin pastor and author MaryAnn McKibben Dana for a spirited exploration of “yes\, and…” and other tools for faithful improvisation. We are all improvisers\, often without realizing it. The focus of our time together will not be on acting and comedy skills\, but on practices for thriving in the midst of chaotic\, often unpredictable lives. Come for a tasty blend of scripture\, theology\, psychology\, literature\, pop culture\, music\, and more\, as we dream\, discuss\, and play together. \nAbout MaryAnn McKibben Dana\n\n\n\nThe Rev. MaryAnn McKibben Dana is a writer\, pastor\, speaker\, and ministry coach living in the Virginia suburbs of DC.
