POSITION OVERVIEW
The Minister of Spiritual Formation oversees spiritual formation and Christian education for children (birth through Grade 5) and adults. They also support the Minister of Youth regarding youth formation.
EMPLOYMENT STATUS
Three-quarters time (32 hours per week). Specific schedule to be determined at time of employment.
MINISTRY FOCUS
The Minister of Spiritual Formation will help our congregation grow in its Christian discipleship with the goals that:
- Christian education is provided for children from birth through fifth grade.
- Adult church members are participating in spiritual formation activities, such as small group opportunities. This includes both long-term and short-term study opportunities.

- Is committed to team-based ministry—working with lay teams and a staff team—to enable the Church to achieve its mission.
Responsibilities for Children’s Ministry:
- Develop, implement, and coordinate programs for children
- Coordinate and oversee children’s discipleship and ministry opportunities such as Sunday School, worship participation, Traveling Day Camp, family activities, and other ministry opportunities throughout the year
- Recruit, equip, deploy, and supervise teams of volunteers to serve in various areas of children’s ministry
- Collaborate with the Minister of Music on children’s music and arts programs
- Coordinate with children’s Sunday School teachers to select and implement curriculum for children’s Sunday School
- Implement Duke Memorial’s Safe Sanctuaries policy within the Children’s Ministry, and train all volunteers and paid workers serving in Children’s Ministry to do the same
- Communicate Children’s Ministry events and information to parents and congregation through a variety of means, including the Duke Memorial website and social media
- Manage budget and finances for the Children’s Ministry
Responsibilities for Adult Spiritual Formation:
- Lead our ministries of welcoming visitors and prospective members, and oversee systems for welcoming new members, receiving new members, and connecting them with adult discipleship programs
- Lead small groups and other spiritual formation groups, especially short-term groups that focus on a topic, theme, or portion of the Christian year
- Grow the program of small groups, both short-term (6-8 weeks) and longer term, aimed at connecting people with each other and with God. Provide oversight, support curriculum selection, and recruit and train small group leaders
- Equip, resource, and nourish the Adult Sunday School program; train adult Sunday School class leaders; facilitate the startup of new classes; and serve as a curriculum resource for adult classes
- Nurture participation in spiritual formation and discipleship activities in all adult age groups
Other Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Minister of Youth to establish a comprehensive discipleship system for children from birth through grade 12
Supervise the Nursery Coordinator and the Director of Parents’ Morning Out - Be a connecting presence between Parents’ Morning Out, the Weekday School, and the congregation
- Develop specific plans for Children’s Ministry activities to deliberately include Parents’ Morning Out and Weekday School
- At the discretion of the Senior Pastor, serve as Duke Memorial’s representative on the board of the Weekday School
- Participate in worship leadership and planning when appropriate
- Attend and participate in staff meetings
- Attend and participate in Church Council meetings
- Support other staff members and ministries through personal prayer and cooperative efforts
- Participate whenever and wherever possible in other activities that fulfill the Vision and Mission of Duke Memorial UMC
ACCOUNTABILITY
The Minister of Spiritual Formation will:
- In collaboration with the Senior Pastor, set and share goals for ministry including targets for growth of the various programs of children and adult formation
- Be accountable to and evaluated by the Senior Pastor on an annual basis
