Job Description: The Director of Children’s Ministries is a year-round (15 – 20 hours per week) position responsible for the development and implementation of the educational program for children ages birth through fifth grade. This person will work hand-in-hand with our teen ministry, as well as recruit and develop volunteer leaders.
Responsibilities:
· Plan and lead for K – 5th grade Ignite group.
· Work with church council to assess and implement the needs of the church and share concerns involving the children’s ministry.
· Select curriculum to be used in the children’s ministry program.
· Train volunteers to assist with the delivery of children’s ministry programs.
· Implement, oversee and guide all children’s ministry activities, including Children’s Church, Sunday School, Nursery, Vacation Bible School, and Special Events.
· Annually recommend children’s ministry goals to the children’s council and church council.
· Work cooperatively with church staff members to coordinate children’s activities that help achieve the mission and goals of the church.
· Ensure that individuals working with children have completed safe sanctuary training.
· Liaison between Sparta UMC Children’s Ministry and local schools.
Requirements:
· Demonstrates Christian character and commitment in daily life with the ability to articulate a personal faith journey.
· Is comfortable with developing relationships with families involved in the children’s ministry program whether or not they are part of the church.
· Physically capable of sustained activity.
· Able to balance work and family.
· Ability to organize programs and activities and be a self-motivator.
· Maturity and stability which promotes the growth of children.
· Knowledge and experience in Biblical interpretation, child development (and faith development) and religious educational theory and practice.
· Complete Safe Sanctuary training and attend yearly updates of training.
· A commitment to Sparta United Methodist Church itself including regular attendance and participation in the activities of the church.
· Understands and agrees with Methodist theology, policy, program and mission of Sparta United Methodist Church.
Accountability:
· Recognition of the Pastor’s responsibility for the total church and cooperation with the Pastor, Committee Chairs and other Staff.
· Understanding that the Director of Children’s Ministries is recommended for employment by the Staff Parish Relations Committee on behalf of the church.
· The Staff Parish Relations Committee is responsible for recommendation to the Church Council for all matters concerning employment, salary and benefits for approval.
· The Staff Parish Relations Committee is responsible for annual performance evaluation for this position. A ninety-day performance evaluation will be conducted for new hires with an annual performance appraisal to be conducted thereafter.
· This position is subject to personnel policies outlined in the Sparta UMC Staff Handbook.
