Director of Traditional Music and Worship
Job Description
JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE
The Director of Traditional Music and Worship works closely with the Pastoral Leadership to spiritually lead and organize the Traditional Worship Ministries of First UMC. The Director of Traditional Music and Worship is a full-time staff member who is responsible for collaboratively planning and leading traditional music and worship.
RESULTS-BASED ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Director of Traditional Music:
▪ Vision Curator
o Casts vision and strategy for the traditional music and worship ministries
▪ Culture Curator
o Cultivates a healthy culture of family within the traditional music and worship ministries
o Knows the participants, their gifts, and families within the church by name
o Provides spiritual leadership to ministry participants and provides congregational care as needed
o Prays for the participants in the ministry area regularly
▪ Director of Choirs and Ensembles
o Directs and/or supervises other directors of the following choirs/ensembles:
▪ Chancel Choir, Morning Song, Chancel Bells, Youth Bells, Men’s and Women’s Ensembles, Children’s Choirs, Children’s Bells, First Brass, and others as needed
o Oversees rehearsal schedule for choirs and ensembles
o Prepares for and rehearses choirs and ensembles on a regular basis
o Provides retreats for the choirs/ensembles to foster community and learn music
▪ Musical Library and Licenses
o Oversees the care of the music library and purchasing of new music
o Oversees all music licenses and reporting in conjunction with Director of Modern Worship and Music Associate
▪ Developer of Musicians and Worship Leaders
o Recruits and develops musicians, traditional music ministry staff, and worship leaders to serve within the ministry
▪ Instrument Maintenance and Care:
o Partners with the music ministry staff for overseeing the care of musical instruments
▪ Funerals and Weddings
o Coordinates and approves musical needs for funerals and weddings
Director of Traditional Worship:
▪ Collaborates with Pastoral Leadership and music ministry staff in creatively planning weekly and seasonal Traditional Worship Services
o Seasonal Services include but not limited to the seasons of Lent, Holy Week, Advent
o Utilizes Planning Center Service Software for preparation of Service Orders for Global Worship Planning Meetings
o Ensures all details necessary for each worship act is listed within Planning Center Service Software for fruitful worship experiences in-person and online
▪ Oversees the selection of music that compliments the theme of the day for worship
▪ Leads the service music for the Traditional Worship Services and serves as liturgist as needed
▪ Partners with the Director of Communication and Tech Ministry Team to ensure an effective in-person and online worship experience
o Reviews weekly Planning Center Services orders of worship, bulletins, ProPresenter slides, and videos to ensure a cohesive thread for each worship experience
▪ Partners with the Director of Communication for promotions of the ministry
▪ Provides leadership and support to the Worship Committee and their areas of ministry
▪ Provides leadership and support to the Music Committee and their areas of ministry
o Offers other experiences such as concerts and missional outreach-based performances and tours of the ministry
▪ Oversees the recruiting, developing, and scheduling of worship liturgists and volunteers
Financial Stewardship:
▪ Develops and stewards yearly the Traditional Music and Worship Ministries Budget areas

Education/Experience/Skills and Abilities:
▪ Passionate follower of Jesus who is growing in one’s faith
▪ Possess a desire to make and support growth of followers of Jesus
▪ Express a willingness and desire to become deeply part of the life, ministry, mission, and community of First UMC
▪ Bachelor’s Degree in Music
▪ Specialized knowledge of choral music, hymnody, worship
▪ Teachable spirit and hunger to continue education and advancement of personal and professional growth
▪ Member of or willing to join Professional Church Music and Worship Organizations
▪ Minimum of five years’ experience in Church Traditional Music and Worship leadership (United Methodist Preferred)
▪ Proven musical skills in areas of conducting (including choral and orchestral), vocal coaching, and keyboard skills
▪ Effective communicator (verbally through public speaking and written) and adapts communication as needed to be effective with all types of groups and individuals
▪ Proven builder of teams to accomplish a common goal
▪ General knowledge of the technical aspects of traditional worship services
▪ Demonstrated experience with Computer Software (MS Office Suite, Planning Center Services, ProPresenter, etc.)
▪ Ability to physically lift objects up to 50 pounds
▪ Flexible hours required including regular evening and weekend work, especially Wednesdays and Sundays that includes regular standing
