Responding to crisis with prayer and compassion
As Christians, we are challenged to respond with prayer and compassion to the thousands of unaccompanied minors crossing the Southern border into the United States, regardless of our position on immigration. Bishop Ward joins UM Bishop Minerva Carcano (California-Nevada Conference) in inviting all to join in an Interfaith Weekend of Compassion and Prayer for Unaccompanied Migrant Children, July 18-19, from sunrise to sunset.
The Corridor District is organizing a collection of underwear and socks for women and children for shipment to the Brownsville/Mexico border. The drop-off place is Sanctuary/Lakewood UMC at 2317 Chapel Hill Rd., Durham on Saturday July 26, from 9 a.m.-12 noon. If you need to drop off items before July 26, contact the Rev. Stewardship seminar for new pastors
Pastors in their first appointment are part of a Stewardship Seminar presented by the Conference Committee on Financial Discipleship. The summer seminar will be August 16, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount. Lunch is included.
The NC Conference Cabinet has deemed the topic of stewardship to be crucial and therefore considers participation in the Stewardship Seminar to be mandatory. In the past, this seminar has been 2-3 days and required overnight stays. The Financial Discipleship Committee has changed the format to include short one-day events in locations that should be easily accessible. The focus of this seminar is “Building the Church Budget and Developing a Culture of Stewardship.” Please go to the Financial Discipleship webpage for more information and registration links.

UMF to hold Ways to Means workshop
The next Ways to Means workshop, sponsored by the United Methodist Foundation, will be held at the United Methodist Building from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21. An event for both clergy and lay leadership, participants will have the opportunity to attend two breakout sessions chosen from the following: 1) Year-Round Stewardship; 2) Capital Campaigns; 3) Endowment Development/Planned Giving; and 4) Fund Management, Doing Good While Doing Well. Music workshop with John Bell
The upcoming music conference, “Faith in our Music: Many Voices, Diverse Chords, Common Hopes,” will be held at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA, Sept. 23-25. This ecumenical and diverse event features John Bell from the Iona Community in Scotland, and other fine musicians helping participants learn about new forms of congregational music for folks of all denominations, abilities, and ages.
