March 7 – 13, 2021 is Severe Weather Preparedness Week in North Carolina<\/a>. Throughout the month of March, we will share resources and tips on how to prepare your family and home for severe weather. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are a few steps you can take to prepare for tornadoes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergency kit <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create an emergency kit<\/a> that contains water, food, and supplies. If you already have a kit, make sure the spare batteries work and the food is not expired. Include medications, spare batteries, flashlights, cash, and identification in your kit. Don\u2019t forget your pets when you are gathering your supplies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Include COVID-19 supplies, such as hand sanitizer, cleaning materials, two cloth face coverings per person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communication Plans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create a communication plan. Make sure you communicate your plans with out-of-state family members and check in with them as soon as possible after the storm has passed. Establish calling trees, locate storm shelters and make necessary arrangements for your pets. Watch NC Emergency Management\u2019s \u201cMake a Plan<\/a>\u201d video for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identify and practice going to a safe shelter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergency Contact Information<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write down a list of emergency contacts and keep a physical copy with you. It is important to include an emergency contact that lives out of your area and can be reached by emergency officials. Make sure you share the contact information with your family members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prepare your property<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secure loose items around the home and church: lawn furniture, playground equipment, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergency Updates<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to have access to severe weather updates and information from emergency officials. Know where your local emergency shelters are located and what the evacuation routes are for your location. Download the FEMA or the ReadyNC app to stay updated during a storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
