Here are some tips that we share with congregations about healthier communication techniques and skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10. Decide in advance how long you want the interaction to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>9. Choose an appropriate time and place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8. Practice what you want to say in advance. You might want to write out a brief statement of the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. Ignore what \u201cthey\u201d, \u201cother people\u201d, or \u201ca lot of people\u201d think.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Ignore anonymous communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Speak with the people directly involved in the issue or situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Listen more than you speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Introduce a difficult topic by saying, \u201cHelp me understand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Speak only from your own perspective. Do this by using \u201cI\u201d statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. When you have something sensitive to discuss, face-to-face conversation is best. Phone calls or video calls are secondary options.
