Several Harbor District United Methodist churches in Brunswick County are participating in a countywide literacy initiative called BEST for Kids (BEST = Brunswick Early Success Team). The initiative was developed by a collective impact task force of community leaders which included representatives from various entities (local government, business, non-profit, law enforcement, higher education, the United Way, and The United Methodist Church) working in partnership with Brunswick County Schools. The program’s primary focus is on utilizing volunteer tutors to help children read on grade level by the end of the 3rd grade. Tutors receive training in the “Letter Land” literacy curriculum and are matched with a specific student in need of improving their reading. Volunteers work with their student two days a week (30 minutes each day) throughout the school year. BEST for Kids is aligned with the goals of C4C.
If you have a C4C success story to share please submit it to your District Coordinator.
