In this Connections video, Bishop Ward talks about how God’s generosity is now ours to share with others.
May you know today the grace of our good and generous God. The texts appointed for this Sunday are from Luke 15 – two short parables.
First, the story of a lost sheep – a shepherd, realizing that a sheep was lost, left those who were safe and went out and found the lost sheep and brought the sheep home, rejoicing that the one who was lost had been found. And a woman, as she counted her coins, realized that one of her coins was lost. So she swept her whole house until she found it, giving thanks that the coin that was lost had now been found.
Sometime ago, Mike and I started picking up lost coins off the sidewalk or the parking lot pavement. It’s amazing how many you find across time and when this text rolls around in the lectionary, I like to take the coins and share them with children in the children’s story.
These coins, in this container, have all been lost. There’s nothing wrong with them. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and seeing them shining on the sidewalk, they were picked up and returned to safety.
We give thanks that the generosity of our God shines forth in these wonderful Gospel stories. The generosity which God shares with us is ours now to share. Today, in Garner, the Council on Finance and Administration of our Conference, is meeting.
I invite your prayers for these who are set apart for this particular work among us. We are at the time of the planning of fall stewardship campaigns in our local churches. Let us pray for one another, that we may find ways to speak of the ways of God and to live it in such ways, that even greater generosity will flow, so that our church will be strengthened and our mission will be firmly established in the world. We do this because we know a great and generous God, who searches for lost sheep and who sweeps for lost coins.
Thank you for your generosity through your local church this day, and for the work we share in the world through The United Methodist Church.
