Bishop Ward gives thanks for public schools and extends an invitation to two events for persons seeking information about church/public school partnerships or persons wishing to deepen their commitment to existing partnerships.
(There is no cost to attend the C4C Summit on Aug. 19, but for planning purposes, registration is required.)
Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ, who loved little children and who welcomed them.
Today is our grandson’s second day of kindergarten. Amos is beginning his journey through public schools. Today I give thanks for the public schools of North Carolina and the public schools at every place across our nation and for the opportunity that all children have to be gathered in, to be nurtured, educated, and to grow in wisdom as they grow in stature and in favor with God and with all people.
Each year, we have a Summit for Congregations for Children. It is at this Summit that we are renewed in our commitment to serve God’s children in every place. This year, the Summit is about to unfold, Saturday, Aug.19, from 10 a.m – 2p.m. at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh. I hope you will come whether you are considering a partnership, whether you want to grow your partnership or whether you want to simply participate, celebrate, and expand the partnership in your church.
We have amazing speakers coming to be with us. They will speak from experience in New Bern, North Carolina, in communities and schools across North Carolina and from Floris United Methodist Church in Herndon, Virginia. These leaders will help us grow in our capacity to be engaged with all children. I look forward this year’s Summit.
Eighty-three percent of our local churches are engaged in Communities in Schools and we want to make that 100%. I hope to see you there.
On Wednesday following, on August 23 at 1 p.m., I am convening a Bishop’s Forum on Public Education. The North Carolina Annual Conference together with the Western North Carolina Conference passed resolutions at their 2016 Annual Conferences. These resolutions stated that we would be engaged together in advocacy with the legislature relative to funding for public schools.
I hope to see you at these two events, Saturday, Aug. 19 and Wednesday, Aug. 23, as we deepen our commitment and celebrate our ministry with all God’s children.
