Bishop Ward and Chris Harman discuss Christian Formation ministries and the ministry of the laity in the North Carolina Conference.
BISHOP: Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ.
We celebrate Christian Formation ministries in our annual conference – ministries of all ages, in all places, in all churches. Chris Harman is our leader for these ministries. We had a wonderful time at annual conference celebrating the ministry of the laity.
CHRIS HARMAN: Yes we did, Bishop. What we decided to do this year was have a little fun with a report. What we chose to do was to employ a very popular television game show technique. You know the one – they give you the answers and contestants come up with the questions. Here’s three of the questions that we used. See how you do.
Last year, we had 79 packing events that produced more than 1.3 million meals. Question what is Stop Hunger Now? Here’s another answer. 530 laypersons participated in 38 classes. Question what is Lay Servant Ministry. One more answer. We had more than 2,000 laypersons offer service with a value of more than $1.5 million. Question was Volunteers in Missions.
These and so many other stories are part of the laity and life of our annual conference and we know there’s more stories out there. Imagine this – if you could get all of the stories captured from the work of all the laity in this conference, what a story that would be. To borrow from an old hymn title, we’ve a story to tell to the nations and laity in this conference, Bishop, are making an impact for the cause of Christ.
To tell us your stories. We are still collecting them each year from January through December. Go to the Conference website, nccumc.org, open up the search box and type in the words “Lay Ministry impact.” That will take you to the form. Fill it out as many times as you need to to tell us as many stories as you need to because we know, there’s a lot more out there Bishop.
BISHOP: Thank you Chris and thank you laity across the annual conference. These stories inspire. They are a great gift. Do tell those stories.
