We will use electronic devices at the 2019 North Carolina Annual Conference to vote for delegates to the 2020 General Conference and 2020 Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference.
Numbers have been preassigned to each Elder and Deacon in Full Connection. Voting clergy will enter into a keypad the number(s) of the clergy they want to elect, pressing “Send” after each selection.
Clergy who wish to be a delegate are encouraged to submit a Clergy Profile Form online. Laity who submit a Laity Profile Form online will be assigned a number before the annual conference session. A list of these numbers will be posted on the conference website and included in the annual conference registration packet. A lay person who has not filled out a Laity Profile Form online but who, during the annual conference session, wishes to be a considered for election may request a number from the conference secretary. Their number will then be shared with the body.
All members of the annual conference session should report to the Greenville Convention Center lobby upon arrival to be registered for annual conference. Lay and Clergy members should proceed to the electronic voting desk to pick up their electronic voting handset.
The color of your lanyard will indicate your eligibility to cast ballots. You will be able to vote in ballots for which you are eligible.
Every handset will be tested before the conference. Before elections begin, we will have a tutorial and test votes. If your handset does not work properly for any reason, please visit the station where you picked it up for help.
Voting typically happens in this way:
The bishop announces the start of a ballot.
You will be given three (3) minutes to vote for up to eight (8) persons on a ballot. (The bishop may extend or reduce the time limit according to the needs of the body.)
At the conclusion of voting, the bishop will review the results and (if the ballot is certified) announce the names of those elected (if any).
The bishop may also announce (and have displayed) other useful information including the number of ballots cast, the names and vote totals of those not elected but receiving the most votes, etc.
The bishop announces the start of another ballot (if needed).
To use your electronic voting handset:
When the bishop starts a ballot, enter the number of the person you wish to vote for then press SEND.
Enter the second number of the person you wish to vote for then press SEND.
Repeat the process for up to eight (8) votes in each ballot.
If at any time you wish to clear all your votes on the current ballot and start over, enter 000 then press SEND.
An election is made if a nominee receives a simple majority of valid votes cast. Once a person is elected, their name and number are removed from the listing. A person can also request that their name be removed from consideration. The voting continues until the complete delegation roster is attained.
Returning the Handset
When your balloting is complete (lay then clergy), please return the handset in the designated area to be announced. If you forget to turn in your handset, we will follow‐up with you after the conference and ask you to return it. If the handset is misplaced, lost, and/or not returned, you will be responsible for the $75 replacement cost of the handset.
If you have any questions regarding voting or procedures, please contact a teller or visit the help desk in the exhibit hall.
