Schedule Changes In The Conference Office

Posted under: NC Conference

In an effort to be better stewards of creation and especially to conserve on fuel consumption, the Conference staff is moving to a four-day work schedule. Beginning May 2, persons working in the United Methodist Building in Garner will extend each work day, Monday through Thursday, so that the same number of hours will be worked by each employee as before. Conference staff will begin to take Fridays off, as of May 6.

The United Methodist Building will be open each day, Monday through Friday, with a receptionist at the desk and some activities already scheduled for Fridays throughout the summer. E-mails and calls can be received on Fridays, although replies may be delayed until the following Monday.

For the 4-day work week to be a significant cost savings for the Conference, I believe the building should be closed on non-work days (Friday – Sunday)… with lights off and heating/air conditioning set on the most energy-efficient temp (considering moisture control and the cost of bringing the temperature back to the human-comfort level on Monday. To do otherwise, only lowers the transportation cost of individual workers.

      Hey Chris,

The Conference building is already set for vacant status for the lighting and environmental controls for weekends except when there is a meeting planned. The building is changed to occupied status when there are weekend meetings. There are still a good number of meetings planned for Fridays so the building is open to accommodate those meetings. There are also some staff who are not able to work extended hours due to family or educational commitments and they are still working the regular five day work week. Even with a few staff and meetings on Friday, we believe utility usage is down as fewer lights are on and water consumption is lower. The goal is to reduce costs as much as possible and feasible for the conference and staff but also to reduce emissions from commuting as much as possible. We hope that our work to this goal is favorable cost wise as well as in impact to the environment. We also work mindful of our goal that the ways the conference assists and equips local churches must not be diminished by this change in schedule.
