Refugee Co-Sponsorship Educational Event

Posted under: Events

Refugees come to the United States from around the world – Africa, Asia, India and the Middle East to name a few of the regions listed as the homelands to the newest refugees in 2008. In 2007, more than 14 million people worldwide fled their homes because of war and persecution. These refugees seek a safe haven in which to live, yet are often met with hostility. They need guidance and assistance as they resettle and rebuild their lives in the United States . These newcomers bring with them a wealth of knowledge, talent and diversity. Volunteers involved in supporting and walking with refugees during this transitional time share in the beauty of God’s diverse people and the blessing of the relationships formed as a result of welcoming the stranger.

In celebration of these blessings, the NC Conference Committee on Refugees and Immigrants will host a refugee co-sponsorship educational event on Saturday, February 7, 2009. The event will be held at North Raleigh UMC from 9-11 a.m. The Children’s Choir from the refugee ministry at Rhems UMC in the New Bern District will open the event with a presentation. Attendees will hear refugees and those involved in co-sponsorship share their personal stories and will learn about the variety of ways to become involved in refugee co-sponsorship. The Committee is honored to welcome Naomi Madsen, program manager of immigrant and refugee ministries at United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), as one of the guest speakers.
