Dick and Lucy DaughtryDick Daughtry retired long ago, after successfully running his own book store for many years with his wife, Lucy. Dick is 91 and has led a colorful life. He ran against Jessie Owens when he was a student at Carolina (UNC-CH). One of his classmates there was friend and, later, actor Jack Palance, who Dick says, “owes his Hollywood Career to a lost fight which changes his features and gave Jack that rugged look everyone came to know him by.”

Dick served in the US Army in World War II and was the regular radio mechanic for legendary US Ace Gabby Gabreski, who shot down many enemy aircraft in World War II. Dick was also present when US forces liberated the concentration camps at the end of World War II. He speaks of those days to civic groups who want to understand the history of that time. Dick and Lucy are loved by their church and they work to win others to Christ and have been directly responsible for several persons joining their church.

Franklin Thomas is 82 and just recently retired from Sears Roebuck where he worked for the past 30 years. His warm, outgoing nature endeared him to his customers and whenever a younger salesperson thought he’s sweet Franklin aside, Franklin prayed and asked the Lord to help him do his work the best that he could. His sales were always on top, so Franklin stayed at Sears until his eyesight failed and he could no longer “keep up with the small print. God and faith will help you do a lot of things.”

During his retirement party, Franklin received a new large print Bible which will serve him well. You can find him on the front row of his church each Sunday, ready to go out to the front line in the world for the Lord and tell someone how good God is.
