Rebuilding E-mail Infrastructure

Posted under: Infrastructure

The IT Office has been working this weekend to rebuild a large part of our e-mail infrastructure.  Over the last few weeks we have been monitoring a situation in which our spam/antivirus scanners would experience large backlogs.  These backlogs resulted in delays in e-mail delivery.  While the majority of the delays were an hour or so, there were some instances where the delays resulted in much longer waits.

The root cause of this issue was the enormous growth of traffic on our various e-mail systems.  Our e-mail spam/virus scanning server simply could not keep up demand on certain days.  To address this issue the IT Office has been working after hours this weekend to migrate these services over to another physical server.  We are also instituting a second server to help with the overall load.

While e-mail delivery often times seems instant, it is often not the case.  The delays we were seeing however, forced us to make this change.  We will post again once the work is completed.  Thank you.
