The NC Conference has activated a disaster response call center at the United Methodist Building (700 Waterfield Ridge Place, Garner) in readiness for Hurricane Irene. Additionally, the United Methodist Men are working at the Conference warehouse in Goldsboro (formerly MERCI Center) to provide logistics and storm response/recovery support. Volunteers are needed (men, women, and youth/adult groups are welcome). Anyone wanting to volunteer should email disasterresponse@nccumc.org or call 888-440-9167.
More details and updates available at http://nccumc.org/outreach.
Update: The warehouse in Goldsboro does not currently need volunteers.

Goose Creek Island in Pamlico County where the communities of Hobucken and Lowland are, about 250 people are completely devasted. About 80-90% homes are destroyed, and no power for about 7-10 days. The path of hurricane Irene came directly across this island. Any assistance in food, water, ice, clothes, etc would be appreciated. Hobucken United Methodist Church is located there in Hobucken.
Mr. Meece,
Thank you for letting us know of needs in Hobucken and Lowland. If people are able to go to Aurora, the Salvation Army is stationed at the Piggly Wiggly there and is serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and is providing water. We have spoken with Rev. George Jones who lives in Aurora. He has requested flood buckets and water from the Goldsboro Warehouse. They will be in route as soon as we arrange the transportation. Please keep us informed of needs and progress in your area.

I just read an article on facebook about an area “Stumpy Point” NC, and they are in great need of help. Sounds like the water has remained and they are having to use canoes to get to their mail box. Can someone check into this. I couldn’t understand how they can post on facebook if they don’t have electricity.
Ms. Cohoon,
Thank you for your concern for the people in Stumpy Point, NC. Some homes are indeed difficult to access because of the standing water. Craig Parker, our NC Conference Disaster Response Coordinator in the Elizabeth City District, reports that the United Methodist Disaster Response is sending 60 Cleaning Buckets there today and has been sending volunteers to help clean out flooded homes each day.
Yes Stumpy Point is in definite need of help. The Shiloh UM Church has been flooded as well as the parsonage. At least 40 homes have been heavily damaged including loosing a roof. I was the pastor there from December 2010 through June 2011 ( my husband and I were moved to churches in the triangle) and have spoken with some of my previous congregation members. Please send teams there! You can contact Betsy Haas at Kitty Hawk UMC to get teams to Stumpy Point and Collington UMC. (Sorry Betsy but you are in the thick of it there so would have the best information)
Our church, Wesleyan Chapel UMC, Scotts Hill, NC responded to the Elizabeth City District call. Our first ER Team arrived in Wanchese, NC on Wednesday August 31 and stayed thru Sept. 3. Our second Team arrived on Tuesday Sept 6 and stayed thru Sept 9. We worked in Stumpy Point as well and in the Shilow UMC. I want to commend Craig Parker and the team members who hosted us and ran the relief center there in Bethany UMC, Wanchese. They did a masterful job. You can be sure that our ERT plan works and we do touch people’s lives and offer a Christian presence.
